Dry Cleaning VS Steam Carpet Cleaning

Dry Cleaning VS Steam Carpet Cleaning

The two main types of carpet cleaning solutions used in 2022 are dry cleaning and steam cleaning. Unless you’re a professional or have knowledge in carpet cleaning solutions, you may not understand the difference between the two. In this article, we’ll look at the pros and cons of each.

What is Dry Carpet Cleaning?

Dry carpet cleaning involves using specialized machines to clean carpets with chemical cleaning agents that allow for no-moisture or “very low moisture” (VLM) cleaning. The cleaning agents are brushed or buffed into the carpet before being removed, along with all of the dirt, oils, and other sediments that loosen when the cleansers become embedded between the fibres.

Dry cleaning is good at removing stain, dirt, grit, sand and allergens from carpeting. Cleansers can also protect carpet fibres from future stains, similar to how a stain shield spray protects furniture.

What is Steam Carpet Cleaning?

Steam cleaning or hot water extraction cleaning uses water vapour heated to a high temperature at high pressure to thoroughly clean carpets. A strong pump and vacuum send steam deep into the carpet, dislodging dirt, oils, and stains that cling to the fibres.

Steam cleaning is a highly effective and efficient method for removing buildup from carpet fibres, including mold and pet odours. It is also effective at restoring the appearance of dull carpets.

Advantages of Dry Cleaning

  • More convenient for residential purposes. Dry cleaning is great for spot treatments and also useful in situations where it would be difficult to limit traffic on the carpet (such as at the entryway or hallway in a commercial space).
  • Less expensive than steam cleaning.
  • Have a faster drying time. Since they use little to no moisture, dry cleaning dries very quickly compared to steam carpet cleaning.

Advantages of Steam Cleaning

  • Is a safe cleaning solution for those with allergies or sensitivity to scents. The water vapor produced contains no smell.
  • Leaves no residue. Unlike dry cleaners, steam cleaning a carpet does not inject substances into the carpet fibres that would leave residue.
  • Extremely effective. Steam carpet cleaning is very effective at removing mold, dirt, stains and other bacteria from carpets.
  • Can improve the appearance of carpeting.

Disadvantages of Dry Cleaning

  • Don’t work well for deep rejuvenation. Dry cleaning is usually not powerful enough to revitalize and disinfect a carpet.
  • Residue build up can cause carpets to age quicker.
  • Can cause allergic reactions. Dry carpet cleaners may use chemicals that leave residues on carpet fibres or scents that cause allergic reactions in some homeowners.

Disadvantages of Steam Cleaning

  • Requires powerful equipment. Steam cleaning equipment can be heavy and inconvenient to transport.
  • Cannot be used regularly. It’s advised that steam cleaning is not used on a regular basis but periodically.
  • Long drying time. Following a steam cleaning, carpets can take up to 24 hours to dry.
